Friday March 23: The 7 Sets: Conviction

The discussion on Friday, 2012 March 23, 7:00 PM – 8:45 PM will be led by John. He will continue discussion “The Seven Sets” with a focus on the concept of “conviction”.

From John:

“Conviction, apart from Faith, is a core element of the path to awakening. Study of the basic factor of conviction, one of the five faculties and strengths in the 37 factors of Wings to Awakening, is a strategic step in developing the skilfulness required to successfully travel along this path. We will discuss several aspects (social, intellectual, practical) of conviction and their related doctrinal passages.”

Our discussion of Conviction will begin with a review of the An Anthology from the Pali Canon by Thanissaro Bhikkhu (Geoffrey DeGraff) , the section on the Five Faculties that we discussed last year (an excerpted document is attached) and the corresponding sutta references.

Unfortunately, most of the sutta references lie outside of the Majjhima Nikāya, but many of them are included in the attachment. Some of these references can also be found in the text “In the Buddha’s Words: An Anthology of Discourses from the Pali Canon”, edited and introduced by Bhikkhu Bodhi, one of our standard study texts.

I will bring a few hard copies of the Five Faculties attachment to the Friday night meeting, but please print your own copy if possible.

Following our Five Faculties review, we will then discuss Part iii: The Basic Factors, section A. Conviction. This section contains wonderful insights into the factor of Conviction, one of the direct paths, according to the Buddha, to stream entry. It is about a 20 page read with many sutta references. I have included it also as an attachment and will bring hard copies (a very few) with me.

John would like people to bring their own copies of these notes he made:
