Discussion: Right Action – Ethical Eating & Intro To Pali Chanting

The next discussion will be at the new time, Saturday 2012 April 28, 4:00 – 5:45 PM

From Jim:

This session will be in two parts, led by me and then Andrew.

FIRST PART:
I will finish our discussions on The Noble Eightfold Path Number 4 Right Action – Ethical Eating.
Please study Sutta 55 “Jivaka” in the Middle Length Discourses and bring the 14 page package I handed out in the last session.

  • This is a sutta on food. Note the concern regarding cruelty.
  • Should we know how our food comes to us?

I will bring a few copies of B. Bodhi’s translation of this sutta.

At the end of this discussion you will be able to:

  • Describe what you feel is right for you to eat.
  • Compare your position on what to eat with that of a Theravada Buddhist monk or nun.
  • State if your policy might evolve over time.

SECOND PART:
A number of members expressed some interest in a presentation on Pali
chanting, so this Saturday I will be giving a small introduction. I
wanted to let you all know my goals for the presentation ahead of
time. After this presentation, you will be able to:

  •   Pronounce Pali written in the latin alphabet
  •   Distinguish long and short syllables in a Pali text for chanting
  •   Chant along with a chanting recording (with the text in front of you) with the correct rhythm
  •   Describe some ways Pali chanting can be a helpful addition to your practice

I think it will be a lot of fun to do some chanting together; hope to see you there!

AFTER OUR SESSION:
Following the session there will be an optional meditation from 6 – 7 PM led by Robert and Bhante Mahanama.
